In a historic milestone for trade and connectivity, the inaugural journey of the China Railway Express from Xi’an to Kathmandu marks a significant leap forward in regional transportation infrastructure. Sea Sky Cargo Service, a prominent player in the logistics arena, stands poised to facilitate this transformative development as it unfolds.
Embarking from the provincial capital of Shaanxi, the first train of the China Railway Express set its course for Kathmandu, Nepal, laden with goods sought by various organizations and entrepreneurs of the Himalayan nation. Acting Ambassador to China, Sushil Lamsal, elucidated that the goods were offloaded in Shigatse before being transported to Kathmandu via trucks, culminating in an expedited transit time of eight days from Xi’an to the Nepali capital.
This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by Nepali businessmen, signals the commencement of a weekly train service from Xi’an to Kathmandu, underscoring the burgeoning trade ties between China and Nepal. Xi’an, an eminent hub along the ancient Silk Road, serves as a pivotal nexus for freight trains traversing routes spanning the Middle East and Eastern Europe, with the commencement of service to South Asia heralding a new chapter in regional connectivity.
Despite the relatively higher fare associated with this route, Nepali businessmen anticipate swifter delivery times and enhanced efficiency, making it a compelling proposition for trade. The cost of transporting a container from Xi’an to the Nepali border stands at 16,000 Chinese yuan, offering a competitive alternative to traditional shipping routes.
Looking ahead, the sustainability and viability of the Xi’an-Kathmandu route hinge upon the satisfaction and convenience experienced by the business community. Sushil Lamsal emphasized that the ongoing operation of the route will be contingent upon the perceived benefits in terms of both time and cost, providing Nepal with a valuable opportunity to evaluate and optimize its trade infrastructure.
