A REX number (Registered Exporter System number) is a unique identification code assigned to exporters by Nepal’s customs authorities under the EU’s Registered Exporter System (REX). It allows Nepali exporters to self-certify the origin of goods, making their shipments eligible for preferential tariff treatment especially under the European Union’s Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).
Instead of waiting for a long paper trail to get a Certificate of Origin every time, exporters with REX numbers can simply make their own “statement on origin” on commercial documents like invoices or packing lists. This speeds up customs processing, reduces paperwork, and lowers costs.
The REX system was introduced by the EU to modernize and simplify trade for developing countries like Nepal. Its benefits are easy to see:
A REX number for Nepal starts with "NPREX", followed by a unique code (up to 35 alphanumeric characters) for example: NPREX12345678.
Getting your number:
Unregistered exporters:
Can only self-certify origin for consignments valued under EUR 6,000.
Whenever you export eligible goods to the EU, Norway, Switzerland, or Turkey and want to claim preferential duty (i.e., zero or reduced import tax), you must include:
Place this on the invoice, delivery note, or packing list accompanying the goods. Keep your registration valid and update information with TEPC as needed.
Important:
If you misuse the REX system or provide inaccurate origin statements, customs authorities can revoke your number, and your goods may lose duty-free eligibility.
For every Nepali exporter aiming to make the most out of the EU’s GSP, understanding and using the REX number is essential. It saves time, money, and paperwork making it easier than ever for Nepal’s products to reach global markets.
